Biogas is the all-rounder of renewable energies

Biogas can be utilised for the production of electricity, heat, Bio-methane and fuel.

Biogas is produced from (Energy-)crops, manure, sewage sludge, and other organic waste.

Most biogas-plants in Germany were build and operated by farmers.

In recent years local and national energy suppliers increasingly invest in biogas production.

In 2006 for the first time in Germany Biogas was  fed into a local gas distribution pipeline and replace natural gas (in Pliening near Munich).  In 2007 there were 5 Biogas-Plants in Germany feeding Biogas into the natural gas networks.

Compared to other renewable energies and alternative ways of utilising biogas the usage via existing natural gas networks is of highest efficiency.

The future: producing biogas to replace natural gas

The advantages of feeding biogas into the existing gas distribution networks are:

· Production and utilisation of Biogas can be de-coupled,

· Block-heat and power-plants can be  placed at optimal locations.

· Via the use of existing gas distribution pipelines Biogas can be used in the most efficient and economic ways.

Planning, constructing and running a biogas-plant for supplying the biogas into the existing gas distribution network is a complex undertaking. Each concept must specifically address the peculiarities of the plant-location, partners involved and raw-materials utilised. Furthermore the successful planning and running of such biogas-plants requires the close cooperation between local agriculture, administration and energy supplier. Therefore the sound preparation and planning is a precondition for a successful Biogas-plant
